The Dimplex Scala 22 Inch Optiflame Electric Fire is a wide-format inset fire designed to create a more substantial fireplace feature while retaining the convenience and simplicity of electric heating. Finished in sophisticated Black Nickel, its broader 22-inch fascia gives the Scala greater visual presence than a conventional 16-inch inset fire, making it an excellent choice for larger fireplace surrounds.
Despite its wider appearance, the Scala 22 is designed to work with a standard 16-inch fireplace back-panel opening. This makes it particularly useful when upgrading an existing fireplace where you want a wider, more contemporary look without necessarily altering the existing opening.
At the heart of the Scala is Dimplex's Optiflame technology. The LED flame effect creates realistic flickering flames above an illuminated log-effect fuel bed, bringing the appearance of a traditional fire into the room without the maintenance associated with solid fuel or gas.
The flame display can be customised with multiple flame themes and adjustable brightness settings, allowing the appearance to be changed to suit the room and occasion. Ambient downlighting adds further depth to the fuel bed and flame display.
Importantly, the Optiflame effect can operate independently of the heater. This means the Scala can remain a focal point throughout the year, providing fireplace ambience during warmer months without producing unwanted heat. The flame effect consumes only around 13W according to Dimplex's current retail specification.
When additional warmth is required, the integrated fan heater provides two selectable heat settings with a maximum marketed output of 2kW. Electronic thermostatic control helps maintain the selected room temperature rather than requiring the heater to operate continuously.
An 8-hour timer provides additional convenience, while the supplied remote control allows the flame effect, ambient lighting and heating to be adjusted without approaching the fire. Manual controls are also provided directly on the appliance.
The Scala is primarily designed for inset installation, but Dimplex also offers an optional spacer kit. This allows the fire to be installed against a suitable flat wall or within a fireplace surround where sufficient recess depth isn't available.
